Workshop held

The Office of the Vice President for Research and International Relations (OVPRIR) organized a workshop on “The Essence of Scholarly Publishing” at School of Graduate Studies, St. Mary’s University, on January 13, 2022.

Welcoming speech was made by Misganaw Solomon (PhD), Vice President for Research and International Relations, who thanked the facilitators for accepting the invitation to share their knowledge, expertise and experience in the area of scholarly publishing.

The facilitators, Professor Damtew Teferra, professor of higher education and founding director of the International Network for Higher Education in Africa at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and Dr Wondwosen Tamrat, President of St. Mary’s University, Ethiopia, touched upon a wide range of topics on scholarly publishing. The topics covered included:  

  • Scholarly communications 
  • Scholarly publishing 
  • Why publishing?  
  • Nature and types of journals  
  • Targeting the journal  
  • Academic style soups  
  • Review responses and handling comments  
  • Life after acceptance: fixing and proofing, among others.
  •  

The presentation was enriched through Q and A, which was grounded to real life scholarly experiences where practical examples were presented to give the audience the insight into the topics stated above. 

 

Participants of the workshop expressed that the presentation was so inspiring, informative and value-adding.

In attendance were SMU faculties and academic leaders.
