The 21st International Conference on Private Higher Education in Africa
St. Mary’s University, since its establishment in 1998, has been working on research and knowledge transfer, which is one of the pillars of higher learning institutions. Among the five annual research events SMU runs, the International Conference on Private Higher Education in Africa draws renowned scholars from across the world to debate on diverse issues of higher education.
Initiated by St. Mary’s University in 2003, the International Conference on Private Higher Education in Africa has been organized on an annual basis for the last two decades aiming at creating a platform for a wide-range of actors, educators, policy/decision makers, higher education leaders, and partners engaged in higher education.
This year, SMU, the Association of African Universities, University of KwaZulu-Natal, the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Education, African Union, International Network for Higher Education in Africa (INHEA), and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), are jointly organizing the 21st International Conference to be held at Inter Luxury Hotel, Addis Ababa, from May 9-11,2023.

The theme of this year’s International Conference is “Sustainable Development in HE: Reality or Hype?” The event is anticipated to bring about 300 prominent educators and researchers from Africa, Asia, Latin America, America and Europe. It will deliberate on issues pertinent to the enhancement of quality education in African institutions of higher learning. It is expected to generate policy-relevant recommendations from various scientific research papers, panel discussions and reflections under different themes and sub-themes. It will also serve as a platform for networking among researchers, educators, and leaders in higher education institutions.
St. Mary’s University, by organizing the Conference for the last 20 years, has taken a leading role in bringing together African researchers to share their knowledge and experiences and work towards the betterment of Africa. The University, using the platform, has been promoting the efforts by the Government of Ethiopia to achieve accessible, equitable and quality education to its citizens.
It is anticipated that more than 20 research papers will be presented and discussed and several panels which will bring leading scholars together will take place. The research papers and proposed recommendations presented at the conference, along with the welcoming remarks, opening remarks, keynote addresses, and thematic speeches will be published in proceedings and distributed to stakeholders.

የ21ኛው ዓለም አቀፍ የግል ከፍተኛ ትምህርት ጉባዔ ጋዜጣዊ መግለጫ
ቅድስት ማርያም ዩኒቨርስቲ ከተመሰረተበት ከ1991 ዓ.ም ጀምሮ የከፍተኛ ትምህርት ተቋማት ከሚጠበቅባቸው ታላላቅ ኃላፊነቶች አንዱ የሆነውን የምርምር ዕውቀት ሽግግር ሥራ በስፋት ሲያከናውን የቆየ ሲሆን ከነዚህ ተግባራት አንዱ በአፍሪካ በግሉ ዘርፍ በሚገኙ ከፍተኛ የትምህርት ተቋማት ላይ የሚያተኩረው ዓለም አቀፍ የትምህርት ጉባዔ ነው፡፡
ይህ ጉባዔ በቅድስት ማርያም ዩኒቨርስቲ ሃሳብ አመንጭነት ከ1995 ዓ.ም ጀምሮ በየአመቱ በአገራችን እየተካሄደ ያለ ሲሆን ዓላማውም በአፍሪካ የከፍተኛ ትምህርትን በማስፋፋት ሂደት ተሳታፊ ለሆኑ የተለያዩ ተዋናዮች ማለትም የትምህርት ባለሙያዎች፣ ፖሊሲ/ውሳኔ ሰጪዎች፣ የከፍተኛ ትምህርት አመራሮችና አጋሮች በአፍሪካ ከፍተኛ ተቋማት ውስጥ የትምህርት ጥራትን ከማሻሻል ጋር የተገናኙ ጉዳዮች ላይ የበኩላቸውን ድርሻ እንዲወጡ የውይይት መድረክ መፍጠር ነው፡፡
በዚህም ዓመት ዩኒቨርስቲያችን ከአፍሪካ ዩኒቨርስቲዎች ህብረት፣ ደቡብ አፍሪካ ከሚገኘው ኩዋዙሉ ናታል ዩኒቨርሰቲ፣ ከኢ.ፌ.ዴ.ሪ ትምህርት ሚኒስቴር፣ ከአፍሪካ የከፍተኛ ትምህርት ዓለም አቀፍ ኔትዎርክ፣ ከአፍሪካ ህብረት እና ከተባበሩት መንግስታት የትምህርት የሳይንስና የባህል ድርጅት (UNESCO) ጋር በመተባበር Sustainable Development in HE: Reality or Hype? በሚል ጭብጥ 21ኛውን የአፍሪካ የግል ከፍተኛ ትምህርት ዓለም አቀፍ ጉባዔ ከግንቦት 1-2 ቀን 2015 ዓ.ም በቀድሞው ኢንተርኮንትኔንታል አዲስ በአሁኑ ኢንተር ላግዠሪ ሆቴል፣ ያካሂዳል፡፡
21ኛው የአፍሪካ የግል ከፍተኛ ትምህርት ዓለም አቀፍ ጉባዔ የአፍሪካ ከፍተኛ ትምህርት ጥራትን ለማሻሻል በሚረዱ ጉዳዮች ላይ የሚያተኩር ሲሆን በተለያዩ ዋናና ንዑስ ጭብጦች ላይ ተመስርተው ከሚቀርቡ ሳይንሳዊ የምርምር ወረቀቶችና የፓናል ውይይቶች ለፖሊሲ የሚያግዙ የመፍትሔ ሃሳቦችን ያመነጫል ተብሎ ይጠበቃል፡፡ በተጨማሪም በጉባዔው ላይ በሚሳተፉ የከፍተኛ ትምህርት ተቋማት ተመራማሪዎች፣ የትምህርት ባለሙያዎችና አመራሮች መካከል ትስስር እንዲፈጠር ዕድል ይሰጣል፡፡ በአፍሪካ በሚገኙ የግል ከፍተኛ ትምህርት ተቋማት እንቅስቃሴ ላይ የሚያተኩረው ይህ ዓለም አቀፍ ዓመታዊ ጉባዔ ኢትዮጵያን ጨምሮ ከአፍሪካ፣ ከእስያና ከአሜሪካ የከፍተኛ ትምህርትና የምርምር ተቋማት የተውጣጡ ታዋቂ ምሁራንና ተመራማሪዎች የሚሳተፉበት የጥናትና ምርምር መድረክ ነው፡፡
ቅድስት ማርያም ዩኒቨርስቲ ይህንን ጉባዔ ላለፉት ሃያ ዓመታት በማካሄድ አፍሪካውያን ተመራማሪዎችን በአንድ መድረክ እያገናኘ እርስ በርስ እንዲማማሩና የወደፊቷን አፍሪካ የተሻለች ለማድረግ እንዲቻል እየተደረገ ያለውን ሁለንተናዊ ጥረት ለማገዝ የመሪነቱን ሚና በመጫወት ላይ ከመገኘቱም በላይ አገራችን በተለይ በትምህርት ዘርፍ እያደረገች ያለችውን ከፍተኛ ሚና በማስተዋወቅ መልካም ገጽታዋ እንዲጎላ ትልቅ ድርሻ በማበርከት ላይ ነው፡፡
ከ300 በላይ የሚሆኑ ከልዩ ልዩ ሃገራትየተውጣጡ ታዋቂ ምሁራንና ተመራማሪዎች እንደሚሳተፉበት በሚጠበቀው በዚህ ጉባዔ 20 የሚሆኑ የምርምር ጽሁፎች የሚቀርቡና ውይይት የሚካሄድባቸው ሲሆን የጉባዔውን የእንኳን ደህና መጣችሁ መልዕክቶች፣ የመክፈቻ ንግግርና፣ በጉባዔው ዋና ዋና ጭብጦች ላይ የሚደረጉ ንግግሮችን አካቶ በተለያዩ ምሁራን የሚቀርቡ የጥናትና ምርምር ጽሁፎችና የፖሊሲ ምክረ ሃሳቦችን በምርምር መጽሔት (ፕሮሲዲንግስ) ታትመው ለባለድርሻ አካላት የሚሰራጩ ይሆናል፡፡
